Ishpeming- MI – On May 21, 2015 the Western Marquette County Health Foundation awards their spring round of competitive grants during a grant ceremony from 12:00-1:00 at the foundation office. The foundation funded $22,000 in grants. The successful recipients are:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette and Alger Counties – $7,000: GirlPower West to provide specialized services to girls in Western Marquette County through Community-Based Mentoring and the Lunch Buddies Program taking place at Ishpeming, Negaunee, NICE and Republic/Michigamme Schools
Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum – $6,000: Incredible Journey Body Exhibit teaching children and adults about the body, how it works, and how to take care of it.
Range Area Mountain Biking Association – $5,000: To purchase equipment for volunteers to use to groom the Range Area Mountain Biking trails for Snow Biking, Skiing, and Snowshoeing.
YMCA of Marquette County – $4,000: Summer Speech Therapy Program to provide 6-8 weeks of intensive speech therapy to children ages 3-12.
In addition, the foundation will award $2,000, the proceeds of its 2015 Head to Head Bike Race, to the YMCA of Marquette County West End Facility Scholarship Program.
The Foundation is dedicated to providing funding for health and wellness solutions for the communities within Western Marquette County. This includes, but is not limited to, the programs addressing the following Critical Health Indicators of the region (2010).

Mental Health and Social & Emotional Support
Health and Wellness
Un-or under-insured, primarily children
The Western Marquette County Health Foundation prioritizes funding based on programs that serve individuals in a specific geographic area, which is defined as the two cities (Ishpeming & Negaunee) and nine townships (Ishpeming, Negaunee, Ely, Republic, Michigamme, Tilden, Champion, Humboldt, Richmond).
Since its transition from the Bell (Hospital) Foundation, the foundation has approved funding for approximately $70,000 to nonprofits through grants and donations. With this grant cycle, the foundation increases its total support to the community to approximately $100,000. The next grant deadline is October 1.
